Description

This Business Called Art is an ongoing project for Orana Arts offering professional development opportunities for the creative communities of the Orana Region. This round of workshops will cover two topics Digital Engagement for Creative Communities and Getting Organised in the Arts.

Digital Engagement for Creative Communities

Whether you’re an individual creative or a small arts organisation, it’s valuable to showcase your work or events. Print and radio marketing are still massively important ways to get your message across, but if you’re not complementing this advertising with social media engagement then it’s time to get involved. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and blogging – learn the basics of these platforms, discover which one can work for you and get the most out of your online community.

Topics covered include: Social media basics: which platform and how many? What’s in a #hashtag: smart Twitter use Post visibility: Facebook Finding and engaging your community Common mistakes and how to avoid them Make your time online count

Getting Organised in the Arts

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all just enjoy our creative endeavours without worrying about all of this boring business stuff? Unfortunately if you’re running a small arts organisation or conducting your arts enterprise as a sole trader you’ll need organisational and management skills. Get the tips you need to have you and your team or volunteers running that project or organisation at peak efficiency.

Topics covered include: Learn how to implement online filing systems, whether for yourself or sharing; Get tips on freelance administration including invoicing and recordkeeping; Plan projects and manage volunteers effectively; Make the most of your resources; Apply for grants and approach sponsors/partners or festivals/reviewers Professionalism: not a dirty word in the arts.

Portia Lindsay has extensive arts management and communications experience, having spent years working in Sydney-based arts organisations. She is now the general manager for Seizure, Vice-Chair and marketing co-ordinator for Mudgee Readers’ Festival and a freelance writer and editor.

These workshops are open to anyone but geared towards creative communities and would be of particular benefit to organisers of community arts events and festivals, art makers, representatives from local arts groups and cultural staff in local councils.
