Description

Dr David Kemp - A Brief Introduction to Floods

Floods often affect Hills dwellers. But what about the science behind the investigation, prediction and management of floods? The field is engineering hydrology, and it seeks to understand the processes that cause floods, how to estimate how their magnitude changes with the probability of occurrence, and what their impact will be. It is a fascinating field of enquiry in which we are always learning.

This talk aims to give a brief introduction to floods and flood management by answering some of the questions often posed such as:

  • How do catchments react to rainfall, and what processes are occurring?

  • How is rainfall and streamflow measured, and what information is available?

  • How is the magnitude and probability of a flood described?

  • What is involved in the estimation of potential flood magnitude, and what their impact will be?

  • How can floods be managed?

  • What are the unknowns in flood hydrology?

Biography

Dr David Kemp has more than 30 years’ experience in South Australian hydrology and stormwater management and has a commitment to furthering knowledge engineering hydrology. He has been for the last six years an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow in the School of Natural and Built Environments, University of South Australia, and is continuing his research into flood hydrology and in the implementation of Water Sensitive Urban Design, particularly relating to the hydrological changes associated with infill development. Dr Kemp has a PhD in engineering hydrology, is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia and a Chartered Professional Engineer.

***Attendees are invited to join the speaker for dinner at the The Scenic Hotel (Norton Summit) after the talk. If you would like to join for dinner, please select the ticket type "General admission (RSVP dinner)" so that we can make a reservation. Please note that dinner is at your own cost.***
