Description

Alrighty. Let’s get serious. Just for a bit.

The debate about whether it makes sense to have gender equality in the workplace…well it’s over. Done and dusted.

The research across the globe (in various industries) categorically points towards gender equality —particularly in senior roles— well, it makes not just good business sense, it’s a strategy that has been shown to increase the profitability of your business. Yep, more women equals more dollars. Who’da thought?

Despite these overwhelming statistics, workplaces still struggle to achieve equality in the workplace. Decades after the suffragettes and the bra burners it still feels like the journey towards equality in leadership roles is mired in quicksand. But thanks to the downright freakin' radness of science, we’re finding a pathway forward toward better ground.

Psychologists, sociologists and anthropologists around the world are continuing to uncover subtle biases that trip us up in the pursuit for gender equality in the workplace, especially at the senior leader level. Curiously these biases are ingrained patterns of thinking that all of us have; both males and females alike. So how can we overcome these entrenched patterns of thinking that hold back not only women from achieving higher levels of success at work, and in doing so enhance our chance of success within the businesses we work for?

In this thought-provoking and personally challenging Think Tank we’ll hold a mirror up to these biases without judgement. We’ll highlight what they are and unpack strategies to reduce their impact on our decision making, and our conversations. With equal parts of discomfort and humour, we’ll explore topics such as;

  • How risk aversion might be holding back emerging women leaders from their own goals
  • Why even simple things like voice patterns can skew our thinking
  • Exploring the biased minefield that exists within most recruitment processes
  • What you can personally do to help educate people around these commonly held biases

In Pragmatic Thinking’s usually quirky way, we’ll present information that is practical, relatable and scientific; arming you with tools you’ll be able to take back into you place of work immediately to effect change. At the very least, it’ll leave you pondering the problem we continue to face at a deeper level.

And lets face it, ’t’s a problem worthy of long chats and a multiple cups of green sencha tea. Gender equality at work. ‘Cos the stakes are high. We’re in the midst of creating a generation of women for the future of work, whether we’re conscious of it or not. And in our minds, it’s a job for all of us to stand up and contribute to.

Ultimately though, we can’t make meaningful change until we understand what is holding us back.
