Event Details

This writing workshop is suitable for ages 16+.

Do you want to create captivating books for children? Join author-illustrator Stephanie Owen Reeder as she explores the creative processes involved in writing and illustrating quality books for young people.

Using examples from classic children's books, as well as her own work, Stephanie will help you structure stories that will captivate any audience - but especially publishers, parents and of course, children!

What will you learn?

You will be guided through several activities exploring how to:

  • come up with a catchy title
  • grab the reader's attention from the very first word, sentence, paragraph or image
  • create convincing characters and settings
  • structure compelling and meaningful storylines

What should you bring?

This is a hands-on workshop, so please bring the following:

  • pen and paper
  • samples of your work

Dr Stephanie Owen Reeder is a best-selling and award-winning author and illustrator of children's books, including her picture book I've got a feeling!, which was an IBBY Outstanding Book for Young People, and her Heritage Heroes series of historical novels which have won both the NSW Premier's Award and the CBCA Children's Book of the Year Award. Stephanie has lectured at both UC and ACU in children's literature, and she is also an award-winning book reviewer, who reviews picture books for Fairfax Media. The fourth title in her Heritage Heroes series - Marvellous Miss May, Queen of the Circus - was published in February 2018.
