Event Details

This program is suitable for adults aged 16+

NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month, is the annual attempt by writers around the world to write a book – or at least, 50,000 words of one – in the month of November. It’s a huge task and one that’s hard to succeed at without proper planning. This workshop by fantasy novelist Sam Hawke will take you through some techniques to prepare you for NaNoWriMo, including strategies for idea generation, outlining your novel, developing characters, and of course, making that daily word count. This will be an interactive workshop where participants will start the process of planning their NaNo project so please bring along notepad and writing implement of your choice, and your best ideas for November!

Sam Hawke wanted to write books ever since realising as a child that they didn’t just breed between themselves in libraries. Having contemplated careers as varied as engineer, tax accountant and zookeeper, she eventually settled on the law. After marrying her jujitsu training partner and travelling to as many countries as possible on very little budget, she now lives in Canberra, Australia, raising two small ninjas and two idiot dogs. Her debut novel, City of Lies, was released in 2018. It won the Aurealis Award for Best Fantasy Novel, the Ditmar Award for Best Novel, and the Norma K Hemming Award for excellence in exploring issues of gender, race, disability and class in SFF, and long listed by the British Science Fiction Awards. The sequel, Hollow Empire, is scheduled for release in December 2020.
