Event Details

Bookings essential.

Do you want to illustrate books for children but don’t know where to start? Join author-illustrator Stephanie Owen Reeder as she introduces you to the creative processes involved in illustrating both picture books and illustrated books for young people. Using examples from classic children’s picture books, as well as her own work, Stephanie will help you explore how to structure visual storytelling elements using your own unique artistic style.

What will you learn?

You will be guided through several hands-on activities exploring:

  • the creation of convincing characters
  • the portrayal of settings
  • how to structure storylines
  • the use of visual references
  • the presentation of storyboards
  • how to put together a portfolio.

What should you bring?

This is a hands-on illustration workshop, so please bring the following:

  • lead pencils, an eraser, a sharpener and a ruler
  • a set of coloured pencils and/or coloured felt-tip pens
  • an A4/A5 sketchbook
  • a writing pad.

Dr Stephanie Owen Reeder is an award-winning author and illustrator of children’s books, including I’ve Got a Feeling!, which was an IBBY Outstanding Book for Young People in 2011, and Amazing Grace: An Adventure at Sea, which won the NSW Premier’s History Award in 2012. Stephanie has studied Fine Art at the ANU, and her PhD at the University of Canberra was on evaluating visual narratives in Australian picture books. She has lectured at both UC and ACU in children’s literature, and she is also an award-winning book reviewer, who reviews picture books for Fairfax Media. Her latest book in the Heritage Heroes series, Lennie the Legend, won the CBCA Children’s Book of the Year Award in 2016.
