Description

The Welcome Dinner Project is coming to Hawthorn East for a Community Lunch!

Do you live in or near Boroondara?
Do you love trying new food and meeting new people?
Are you new to Australia and want to meet more local people OR are you a local who wants to welcome newcomers to the area?

In partnership with Rotary Hawthorn, the Welcome Dinner Project is holding a Community Welcome Lunch in Hawthorn East. It will provide an opportunity for people from all walks of life and different cultures to share great food, to make new connections and to celebrate inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging. It will be an opportunity to spend time with people in your neighbourhood, share stories and learn about other cultures in a meaningful and fun way.

Entry is FREE and everyone in the family is invited to come along, although please make sure to let us know if you are bringing a toddler, so we can arrange a high chair if necessary. Each adult should bring a favourite dish or one traditional to their culture to share, “pot luck style”, with the other people who will be seated at your table. You will be asked to tell a short story about your dish as a way of introducing yourself to your table mates.

FAQs

What type of registration should I get?

If you have been living in Australia for more than 10 years, you fit into our 'Established Australians' category. If less, you should register in the 'Newly arrived' category. We only use this information to help balance the numbers of people around the table.

Can I just arrive on the day?

While you don't have to physically bring your ticket with you, you MUST REGISTER beforehand so that you can be allocated to a table. We will mark your name off at the registration desk when you arrive. Each person in your group MUST be registered.

Can children and teenagers attend?

Everyone is very welcome to take part in all aspects of the day. Please note that young children MUST be supervised by their parent/guardian at all times. With your agreement, some teenagers may be seated at their own table, rather than with their parents. Please register the details of everyone you intend to bring when you register yourself.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

The Auburn Bowls Club is a 9 minute walk from Auburn Station. Trams run along Riversdale Rd, and buses run along Auburn Road, both a short walk away. There is street parking aorund the venue.

Why do you need my email address and phone number?

Every guest will be contacted by phone before the lunch to discuss expectations and make sure there are no unanswered questions. Written guidelines will also be forwarded via email prior to the event.

What if I can’t communicate well in English?

The purpose of the Welcome Dinner Project is to bring people together in spite of barriers such as language, and exchange in other ways. The facilitator at your table will assist with this.

Should I bring a main dish or a dessert?

You are welcome to bring either, or both. Remember you will be telling a short story about your dish. Keep in mind that there will not be enough ovens and microwaves in the venue to heat multiple hot dishes at once. Your table facilitator will discuss this with you when he/she rings before the lunch. The facilitators will aim to ensure a good mix of main courses and desserts on each table.

I have a food allergy. How will this be catered for?

The facilitators will ask you about this as well. As part of the introductions at each table on the day, guests will be asked to state the ingredients in their dish. Everyone is encouraged to be aware of their own allergies or dietary requirements and not to risk anything they are not sure of. Any severe allergies that the facilitators know about beforehand will be brought to everyone’s attention.

Will there be alcohol?

No. All Welcome Dinner events are alcohol free.

What if I have other questions?

All registered participants will be sent further guidelines prior to the event. Your table facilitator will be able to answer any other questions leading up to the event.
