Event description

Description

RMIT Performing Arts celebrates the 80th anniversary of the infamous radio broadcast by Orson Welles that caused mass hysteria in the USA, with a modern adaptation of the iconic story written by H.G. Wells.

Our world has changed dramatically since The War of the Worlds was written in 1897...or has it? In times of chaos and terror we witness the full spectrum of human behaviour - bravery, fear and disinterest. Our advancements in technology and communication don't seem to suppress humanity's fear of the other, and our abilities to show our true colours in grim times.

One thing is for sure: there's a lot more memes these days.

We invite you to witness a live radio show in the tradition of the early and mid-century, with performance, live foley sound, multimedia and lush audio landscapes. Did we mention memes?

Written, directed and performed by RMIT students, this adaptation reimagines the story set in present day Melbourne. We are living in a time of great catastrophes - Trump, fake news, nuclear tensions in North Korea, Syria, climate change - the list goes on. How would we react if Mars attacked? One thing seems inevitable:

There will be memes.
