Event description

Description

Do you feel like an escape? Like you'd like to go camping more often, like you need a bush retreat...a Village?! Sounds idyllic, right? But you can't fit that into your busy life! Who can afford to go camping every month, who has the energy, the time, the fuel. Well, look no further Sun and Stars Bushcraft is proud to reveal our latest program...The Village!

Bushcraft is for all, and is best done when all are around. Many hands make light work, and the joy of connecting to nature, slowing down and learning the skills of our forebears is the ultimate relaxation. This program will run monthly, on differing days to maximise accessibility; sometimes Saturdays, sometimes Sundays. We will run adult and child programs side by side, so while you should absolutely feel free to drop off your child and leave if this is more for them than you...for those of you keen to embrace bushcraft yourself, why not let our qualified mentors take your child on a wilderness adventure in the beauitful surrounds of Baden Powell Park, while you hang round the campfire with kindred spirits, learning new things?

Vision

The long term vision of the project is to regenerate an area of natural bushland at Baden Powell Park, and while doing so, create our own village, complete with naturally built huts, fireplaces, bushtucker gardens, cob ovens, bird hides, ropes courses and more. Participants will learn various building techniques, about the local flora and fauna, firecraft, campcraft, weaving and working with natural clay. There's nothing quite like using a pot you made yourself, fired in your own kiln, fashioned from clat dug from the earth by your own hands...what a great cup of tea that truly is!

How does it work?

There is obviously lots to do and we cannot accomplish everything at once! Each Village Meeting will comprise two sessions, a morning session (0900-1200) and an afternoon session (1300-1600). You are welcome to attend either one, or stay all day and attend both. The hour in the middle is a perfect lunch break and opportunity to take a rest and reconnect with your child, hearing about the exciting things they did that morning. Also a time for those arriving for the afternoon session to get settled and ready to go. Each session costs $30 per person, with discounts offerred for booking both sessions, or booking a whole family in.

What is this particular session going to cover?

This first session will be an introductory session to introduce you all to the space and get acquainted with our new home. This month only we will only run a morning session (0900-1200), the Adult Session topic will be Bushcraft 101 where I will endeavour to explain our philosophy, in part some basic skills and generally set the scene for the year ahead. The kids will engage in some free-form nature play as they explore the park, sing songs, play games and do crafts. As the year progresses, there will be plenty of formal projects for the kids too, and afe appropriate skills and experiences to keep everyone enjoying something different all the time!

Sunday, May 20th - Wattle Hurdle
May is the second meeting of our new found Village, and we will start to give it shape by building Wattle Hurdle walls. Historically, such fences have been in common use from the Neolithic Period, right up to medieval times and in many countries are still in use today. We will learn to harvest our materials, work with what we can find locally, in a sustainable manner, and start delineating our Village. The kids will be putting their own mark on the place by working on their crafting space and also taking a walk to see what plant resources are near us that we can use.

Sunday, June 10th - The Planting
This month we want to start our food garden! This will include soil prep, planting, transplanting and starting our worm farm. There is heaps to learn from Ricky our Bush Regenerator as he explains the how's and why's behind what we're planting this month, and what we are preparing to plant in the future. We'll be looking at the local landscape and investigating what is growing wild, as well as introducing some beneficial species and weaving some plant protectors, to help keep our saplings safe from predators...bushrcaft style! Of course, there'll be the usual Earth Arts, bushcraft construction, fire skills and so on going on, so if gardening isn't your thing, don't be shy...there's plenty to do!

What do I need to
know?

On the day, please try and arrive a little early as there is a walk to The Village, from the main entrance of BP Park, those attending late may struggle to find us on their first time! Please bring yourself a packed lunch (if you wish to eat at the park), water bottles and clothing fitting for the bush. Please wear enclosed, sturdy shoes and weather appropriate clothing (sun hats/rain jackets) and make sure all your family have sunscreen on and mosquito repellant if you would like.

If you'd like to know anything more, please do not hesitate to call or email me, the space is currently natural bushland (save for a tarp and brazier) so we are right at the start of this exciting journey and we have our blank canvas upon which we can make our mark, and ensure we are promoting bush life and regrowth at the same time.

I hope to see you in the bush! Andy
