Description

Join artists Maz Dixon, Kevin McKay and Eliza Goss in a open discussion about art prizes and the value of art prizes in building an artistic career. All three panellists are former Waverley Art Prize winning artists.

Maz Dixon is an artist who lives and works in Sydney. After studying at The University of NSW College of Fine Arts and Sydney College of the Arts she has built up a practice based on painting and collage. Her primary focus is souvenir media and its impact on perception of place. Her work has been featured in the Sulman and Mosman Art Prize exhibitions, and she was the winner of the Waverly Art Prize in 2017.

Kevin McKay is an urban landscape painter who holds a Masters Degree in Fine Art from the National Art School and exhibits at May Space Gallery, Sydney. He was awarded the Basil & Muriel Hooper Scholarship from the AGNSW, 2006; the Sydney City of Villages Art Prize, 2009; the inaugural William Fletcher Foundation Scholarship to The British School at Rome, 2011; the Kogarah Emerging Artist Prize, 2012; the Waverley Oil Painting Prize, 2013; the Allan Gamble Memorial Prize, 2015; the People’s Choice Award, Waverley Art Prize, 2016, the People’s Choice Award, Greenway Art Prize, 2017; and Bayside Art Award, 2018.

Eliza Gosse paintings depict Australian Suburbia. Working out of a lineage of Australian artists who have debunked the stereotypes of suburbia under a “super flat” lens, Gosse rather comes to her painting from a background of architecture. Studying at the University of Sydney before completing a Bachelor of Fine Art at the National Art School (2017), the mantra of “form follows function” finds renewed validity in her paintings. Most recently, her painting Budgie Smuggler (2017) was selected as a Finalist in the 2017 Mosman Art Prize (Sydney), and Pink House (2017) was awarded the People’s Choice in the Waverly Art Prize – two paintings that look at Modernist architecture through a lens of classic Australian humour.
