3 FORMAL CPD POINT SEMINAR

For reasons of affordability, convenience and the broader benefits of an urban lifestyle, more and more people are choosing to live in apartments.

Good apartment design is underpinned by efficiency and by sound responses to the challenges of multi residential building design addressed in the Apartment Design Guidelines (ADG) and SEPP 65 – from solar access and ventilation, sustainability and resilience, to privacy and access. But achieving design success is not a simple case of ticking the boxes for these standards.

This seminar explores how SEPP 65 and the ADG can be used to design for greater amenity for residents and more effective buildings. It will also examine the role of design review panels and government, and how to work effectively with planners during the assessment process.

Speakers will address:

  • What ‘good design and amenity’ means for an apartment building – getting the basics right

  • Application of the Apartment Design Guide – how to present your DA

  • Performance vs prescriptiveness – the role of Design Quality Principles, Objectives, Design Criteria and Design Guidance

  • Statutory relationships – SEPP 65, ADG, LEP and DCP

  • Design Review panels– their role and what they are looking for

  • Recent case law – the role of the SEPP 65 and Apartment Design Guide in seeking outcomes through the court

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Architects, urban designers, local government representatives, housing providers, other allied professionals, and students committed to understanding the challenges and opportunities for success in apartment design.
