Event description

Description

It can be challenging to make sense of the therapeutic relationship. The client comes with the circumstances of their pain. You attend to them, ready to use the knowledge and tools you’ve acquired to help in whatever way you can. You are two people in a room bound by the therapeutic hour and together you each have a role in creating the space between you.

Julie McDonald’s presentation raises questions and offers a range of practical tools that you can be used to inquire into the relationships you have with your clients:

• How do you go about conceptualising the experience shared with clients?

• What is your experience of the therapeutic space and how do you make use of it?

• How does the space of the therapeutic relationship differ with different clients?

Julie McDonald is an experienced practitioner with 15+ years working in the arts therapies. A trauma specialist, she uses visual art, movement, voice and drama in both one to one and group work. Julie has worked in diverse settings including youth, mental health and family and intimate partner violence. In addition to her private practice, she is currently a member of the counselling supervision team at Doncare Community Services and is the Coordinator of the Bethel Centre, a counselling and education service of the Uniting Church Synod of Victoria and Tasmania, committed to responding to abuse and misuse of power in the church.
