Event description

Description

Tom Uren AC was one of our country's greatest - a boxer, a soldier and community leader who rose to become the Deputy Leader of the Australian Labor Party. Throughout his long life, Tom championed many causes and one of the toughest was the fight for justice in foreign affairs. It is only fitting, therefore, that the guest speaker for the Second Annual Tom Uren Memorial Lecture is Professor the Hon Gareth Evans AC QC, a man who, like Tom, has worked his entire life to serve the public.

One of the longest serving Cabinet Ministers in Labor Party history, Gareth served in the Hawke and Keating Governments as Attorney-General, Minister for Resources and Energy, Minister for Transport and Communications but most prominently as the Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1988 to 1996. Gareth also held the position of Leader of the Government in the Senate and was Deputy Leader of the Opposition from 1996 to 1998. Gareth is committed to the advancement of international relations and has been internationally recognised for his contributions to the theory and practice of mass atrocity and conflict prevention, arms control and disarmament. Since 2010 Gareth has been the Chancellor of the Australian National University.

Hosting the lecture will be the Member for Grayndler, the Honourable Anthony Albanese.
