Community gardens are a wonderful addition to any urban setting, with proven benefits in providing social cohesion, fresh food diversity and added value to apartment blocks.

As our urban populations expand and the waves of housing that consume formerly agricultural land on our urban fringe roll across the land, we will sooner or later need to really question how to ensure that we have access to fresh, diverse and affordable food.

Professor Jeremy Rifkin of Stanford University explored the ‘Third Industrial Revolution‘, suggesting that the rise of the Internet would meet the rise of the Smart Renewable Energy Grid with every building in Europe to generate its own energy at a micro-scale. There are 190 million buildings in Europe, and here in Australia around 7 million. What if each building could generate even a portion of its own food and energy?



Join Costa Georgiadis, AIH Sydney Regional Convenor Chris Poulton and colleagues at Ryde TAFE for an interesting discussion on how we can look to community gardens and their impacts here in Sydney over the next five to ten years.

  • What role could plantings on our footpaths offer? What are the policies and limitations of these ideas?
  • What role in the future will community-based edible gardens contribute to an economically-viable alternative to our current solutions of importing fruit and vegetables from overseas?
  • What role could our existing vacant, old and disused inner-city rooftop gardens contribute to a viable use for growing and supporting this as a NEW industry?
  • What solutions are we coming up with to reuse existing open spaces for community gardens?
  • How can we as Landscape Architects, Designers, Horticulturists, nurserymen and -women better understand and implement these changes?
  • How can we advocate to achieve these outcomes as an industry?
