Event description

Description

The Remote Kindergarten Pilot (RKP) began in 2016 as a new option for providing a quality kindergarten program for children in remote Queensland where the nearest approved kindergarten is 50km or more away, and their community has certain characteristics.

In this presentation, Professors Perry and Dockett will describe the background to the RKP in Queensland, and how it relates to the national early childhood reform agenda and the national and international research literature. The key elements of the RKP will be described as well as the approach to an impact assessment.

The presenters will unpack the successful elements of the RKP, along with challenges to its implementation, how it is meeting the needs of the children, families, educators and communities in the remote sites, and how it is moving towards the implementation of quality kindergarten programs – as defined by national legislation.

As at August 2017, over 100 children in 30 schools have accessed a kindergarten program under the RKP. Peridot Education Pty Ltd has undertaken an impact assessment of the RKP in both 2016 and 2017.
