Event description

Description

Over two days you will learn the fundamentals of a security mindset and how to identify threats during the software design phase. You will master how to test software for common vulnerabilities via dynamic analysis and measure their impact.

Syllabus

1. Hello world

Like a hello-world program, in the first chapter you will go through end-to-end process of identifying, measuring, reporting and patching a security vulnerability

2. Know where to start

Identify low hanging fruit, learn novel techniques to uncover sensitive meta-data and map an attack surface of a program

3. Create a hacker mindset

Understand the fundamental mindset behind hacking and learn how to identify threats for a software feature during the design phase

4. Identify and exploit security defects

Learn how to identify a vulnerability and measure its impact. Explore common security vulnerabilities on Web Applications. Web is a familiar environment, hence a great technology to start. The approach taught in this chapter can be applied to other technologies. We cover OWASP and go beyond. Security vulnerabilities in the following software components are explored:

  1. Session management
  2. Output rendering
  3. User interface
  4. URL and file handling
  5. Business logic
  6. Second order bugs

5. Hacking contest (CTF)

At the end of the course, everything is put into practice via a fun hacking game

Student Testimonials

“Having most of the testers in one group was great as we helped each other keep up. There is a good balance between theory and practical activities. Having the current real world examples in the presentation slides. Love the setup of Hacking Contest. Nothing like a bit of competition to make it real. Pedram was a great tutor.”

-FinTech Software Engineer, New Zealand

"The balance between the presentation and opportunity to practice was very good. The quiz at the end was very good. The presentator, Pedi, was very good. Good pace."

-Software Tester, Government, Melbourne

"I love the labs and I really like how you go through the mental process in a lot of detail. Seeing the methodology in action was very helpful"

-Security Tester, Financial Services, Sydney
