Event description

Description

There are a number of birds that are active at night, the most impressive of these is the Powerful Owl.

BirdLife Australia is expanding on Sydney’s success and bringing the Powerful Owl Project to Melbourne. The distribution of the Powerful Owl in Melbourne extends from the inner city and suburbs, through to forested areas of Greater Melbourne and beyond. Powerful Owls prefer areas with lots of tree cover, and some tall trees to roost in during the day. A critical resource for Powerful Owls are large mature hollow-bearing trees; from May - August females will disappear into tree hollows to nest. From September-January you might even hear the distinctive call of a Powerful Owl chick “trilling.”

Hear from Dr Caroline Wilson, Melbourne coordinator of the Powerful Owl project who will speak about the Powerful Owl (and other nocturnal birds) and how you can get involved.

The presentation will be held in the Chatham Primary School Hall.

This presetnaiton has been organised for members of Boroondara's Backyard Biodiversity project. Thanks to Nick Bradsworth for the wonderful image.
