On 1 July 2019, the Australian Government introduced a new and simpler Charter of Aged Care Rights. The new Charter places the consumer, a person receiving aged care services, at the centre of their care by supporting them to express their needs, and recognising their fundamental right to be treated with dignity and respect.

Providers are responsible for supporting consumers to understand their rights under the new Charter, and ensure consumers or their authorised person are given a reasonable opportunity to sign a copy of the Charter. This presents an important opportunity for providers to deepen their engagement with consumers and change the way that care is experienced by older people.

About this webinar

OPAN is supporting the Department of Health with raising awareness and providing education about the Charter. This interactive provider briefing and training webinar is the second phase in our education to service providers. This webinar is intended to provide a further opportunity for service providers to understand the Charter, responsibilities, and specific implementation requirements. This session is intended for Aged & Community Services Australia (ACSA) member service organisations, with a focus on frontline aged care workers and managers. It will also include specific content for providers delivering aged care services under Home Care and the Commonwealth Home Support Programme.

  • What are the 14 rights in the new Charter of Aged Care Rights
  • Key changes and rationale for change, including alignment with the new Aged Care Quality Standards
  • Benefits of the changes for both consumers and providers
  • What does signing the Charter mean, and the consumer’s right not to sign
  • Charter implementation requirements, including record keeping principles and what to do with signed / un-signed Charters
  • Charter implementation timelines by aged care program
  • Charter implementation challenges and how to overcome some of the common challenges in practice
  • How to have conversations with aged care consumers around rights and the Charter and resources are available to support you
