The AHRCentre invites you to

The never ending struggle for LGBTIQ human rights in the United Nations

with The Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG

The Honourable Michael Kirby, past Justice of the High Court of Australia, first openly gay Justice of the High Court, and participant in many United Nations activities since his judicial retirement, will address the struggle to include effective responses to violence and discrimination against LGBTIQ people in the human rights machinery of the world.

Under Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, many initiatives were taken to address this area of hostility and denial of human rights. In December 2016, efforts were made in the UN General Assembly to terminate the mandate of the new Independent Expert appointed by the Human Rights Council pursuant to a 2016 resolution. The effort failed, but only by a whisker.

In February 2017, Michael Kirby participated in a new initiative of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to examine the overreach of national criminal laws, when measured against universal human rights. Several of the overreaching laws adversely affect LGBTIQ people in many lands. In April 2017, he also attended and addressed the conference in Bangkok, Thailand to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Yogyakarta Principles, upholding human rights in the context of sexuality and gender identity/expression. In this talk he will explain the progress being made as well as the pitfalls and animosity encountered on the way.
