Event description

Description

Can we spark innovation and influence the arrangement of landscape, open space and off-street parking to create better neighbourhoods?

How do we harness the potential of existing, valued buildings through adaptive reuse and provide the ability to age in a familiar place?

Can we strengthen communities and foster social interaction through designs that embrace shared facilities as well as providing quality private space?

Damian Madigan and Julian Rutt are guests of Prospect Council and the RAIA’s Architecture on Show speaker series whose work focuses on these questions.

Damian Madigan

Dr Damian Madigan is an architect and UniSA academic working across alternative models of infill housing development. His work demonstrates that our older suburbs – even those with heritage and character overlays – might be able to support some of the new housing models Adelaide needs, without the loss of our older houses and mature landscape. Damian will discuss a little of the history of Adelaide’s suburbs and show some of his speculative proposals, including a flexible infill proposition for a pair of Prospect cottages.

“The work I do looks at exploiting the gaps between existing houses, then the challenge is how you create liveable spaces within those zones that traditionally are leftover spaces we give over to cars.”

Madigan Architecture and the University of South Australia won the Manor House category in the national Missing Middle Design Competition
The competition, announced in 2017, was part of the government’s push to have certain medium density housing typologies as complying development in low density residential zones. Competition entrants were asked to design high quality housing that would meet the requirements of the draft Medium Density Housing Code and draft Medium Density Design Guide.
His speculative infill housing scheme Established Manors was described by the jury as
"An innovative, practical and ethical idea to make clever additions and alterations to two existing houses that makes four houses from two. The arrangement and variety of housing types within the four houses allows for flexible intergenerational living.
