Learn the fundamentals of the snatch and clean and jerk , broken down for coaches, trainers and health professionals.

About this Event

In this 6 hour very practical workshop, you will learn the full breakdown of the weightlifting movements designed by Commonwealth Games Representative, Weightlifting coach, and physiotherapist, Phillip Liao.

Workshop info will include but is not limited to:

Snatch

1. Overhead Squat

a) Use as a pre-screening tool – shoulder mobility, thoracic mobility, feet stance

b) Corrective exercises

c) Receiving position

d) Centre of Balance

e) Learn how to be ‘smooth’

f) Grip width

2. Snatch Balance

a) Use as a pre-screen for – jumping mechanics, landing mechanics

b) Corrective exercises

c) Learn full knee extension

d) Learn what weightlessness is

e) Transition of extension into deep squat

3. Hip High Pull

a) Learn the power position (where to produce power)

b) Learn weightlessness that comes from full extension

c) Learn to keep bar close

4. Hip Muscle Snatch

a) Learn the transfer of momentum into the overhead position

b) Learn to roll the arms in the turnover

5. Hip Power Snatch + Overhead Squat

a) Learn direction change at the hips

b) Learn correct overhead squat stance

6. Hang Power Snatch + Overhead Squat

a) Learn to transition from above knee to power position

b) Learn to sweep the bar

c) Reinforce change of direction

7. Power Snatch + Overhead Squat

a) Learn the start position

b) Complete the full movement from floor

8. Snatch

a) Learn the difference between snatch and power snatch

Clean

1. Front Squat

a) Pre screen for – butt wink, squat shoes, upper thoracic mobility requirements, squat depth, vertical torso position

b) Front Squat corrective exercises

c) Learn the front squat

d) Learn the shelf/rack position

e) Learn scapulothoracic and thoracic extensor engagement

2. High Pull

a) Learn the power position in clean

b) Learn to feel the weightlessness of the bar

c) Learn to keep the bar close

3. Hip Muscle Clean

a) Learn to transfer momentum into the shelf position

b) Learn to receive clean with a strong shelf

c) Learn motor pattern of turnover

4. Hip Power Clean + Front Squat

a) Learn direction change

b) Learn footwork for clean

c) Learn to catch bar with direction change

5. Hang Power Clean + Front Squat

a) Learn position of descent to above knee

b) Learn to keep bar close along quads

c) Learn to be patient into power position

6. Power Clean + Front Squat

a) Learn the start position

b) Learn patience into the power position

7. Clean

a) Learn difference in tempo between power clean

Jerk

1. Overhead Press

a) Pre screen for – glenohumeral mechanics in overhead position

b) Corrective exercises

c) Learn to create shelf

d) Learn to use ribcage and traps for bar support

2. Push Press

a) Learn the dip and drive

b) Learn to maintain trunk tension

c) Learn to continue drive through torso

3. No Feet Power Jerk

a) Learn concept of direction change

b) Learn to secure bar with arms

c) Learn to drop hips under

4. Power Jerk

a) Reinforce concept of direction change

b) Learn to sit hip down with feet movement

5. Split Jerk Footwork

a) Learn the lower limb angles of split jerk

b) Learn the benefits of the split jerk

c) Learn the ‘stacking’ concept of split jerk

6. Split Jerk

a) Learn to split jerk with the bar

b) Learn to transfer concept of power jerk into split jerk
