Navigating the Low FODMAP Diet

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a frustrating condition that causes substantial pain and suffering. While medications aren’t very effective at managing IBS symptoms, the low FODMAP diet can provide symptom relief in up to 70% of people with IBS. FODMAP Friendly, in combination with a range of IBS and FODMAP experts, is running seminars to help people with IBS learn how to navigate the low FODMAP diet so that they too can feel the benefits. You’ll learn about how IBS affects your body, what FODMAPs are and why they matter, and how the low FODMAP diet works. We’ll also teach you about practical strategies and resources that make a low FODMAP diet easier so that you can overcome the challenges and quickly get back to feeling normal.

How Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects your body, Dr James Daveson, Gastroenterologist.

In this session, you’ll learn about the basics of IBS, including the symptoms and physiology, from specialist gastroenterologists. They will also explain what’s necessary to get an accurate diagnosis of IBS. You’ll also discover why it’s important to get your IBS under control and why you should consider following a low FODMAP diet to manage your IBS.

Basics of the low FODMAP diet, Joanna Baker, Accredited Practicing Dietitian, Accredited Nutritionist, Registered Nurse, Everyday Nutrition, FODMAP Friendly.

In this session, Joanna will explain what FODMAPS are, why they matter to someone who has IBS and how you can know whether a low FODMAP diet is the right approach for you. You’ll also learn about how the low FODMAP diet works, where you find FODMAPs, and the foods you can still eat on a low FODMAP diet.

Strategies for a successful low FODMAP diet, Dr Glenda Bishop, Registered Nutritionist and Neuroscientist, A Less Irritable Life.

In this session, Glenda will explain the practical aspects of a low FODMAP diet and the tools and strategies that will make it easier to follow. This will include useful resources, reading labels, and finding foods that you can eat with confidence. You’ll also learn about adjusting recipes substituting ingredients, meal planning and eating out safely on a low FODMAP diet.

Testing foods for FODMAPs, Shaynie Ashkenazi, Associate Nutritionist, FODMAP Friendly.

In this session, Shaynie will explain why it’s important that foods are tested for FODMAPs, how FODMAP Friendly makes sure that their testing procedures meet the highest standards, and how you can use the FODMAP Friendly app to make the low FODMAP diet easier to follow. You’ll also discover the wide range of FODMAP Friendly foods that you can use at home.

How a low FODMAP diet has helped my IBS, Alana Scott, A Little Bit Yummy.

In this session, Alana will tell you about her personal experience with IBS, including how she was diagnosed, how she got started on the low FODMAP diet and how her life has improved as a result. She will also share how she dealt with the challenges of a low FODMAP diet and the ways that she’s been able to make her food choices feel more normal.

Q&A session

This final session will give you a chance to ask questions of any of the speakers. We want you to leave with the best understanding of the low FODMAP diet as possible so that you can eat with confidence and get your IBS under control.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

University of Queensland - St Lucia Campus:

Car - The most convenient parking locations are “Pay & Display” parking, which have ticket machines that you then display on your dash. They are located behind the Schonell Theatre at the base of Building 21, or underneath the UQ Centre (27A). Both of these areas are accessible by entering the University on Sir Fred Schonell Drive, going through the first two roundabouts and turning left into Blair Drive. Union Road is on the Right, please follow this road up the hill and around to the left behind the Schonell Theatre. Access to the building is in the centre, next to the child playground.*
*Parking on weekends at the University of QLD is free.

Bus - The closest bus stop is at the end of the Eleanor Schonell Bridge, which links the University with Dutton Park (across the river). Otherwise, the main bus stop within the University is located on Chancellors place, from there walk through the Great Court to the Union Complex. Visit Translink QLD for timetables

Ferry or City Cat
The University of Queensland City Cat stop is located across the road from the University Swimming Pool. From this stop it is just a 3 to 5 minute walk up the hill to the end of Union Road. This stop is the final one before the City Cat turns around to go back into the city.

What is provided on the day?

You will recieve a goodie bag at registration filled with a large range of FODMAP Friendly certified product samples for your enjoyment.

There is a 30 minute morning tea break where tea/coffee and other FODMAP Friendly snacks will be provided. Only lactose free milk will be served with tea/coffee.
