Event description

Description

On 29 May 1942 five large Japanese submarines rendezvoused some 35 nautical miles northeast of the entrance to Sydney Harbour and so began the campaign by the Japanese to sever Australia’s contact with the United States. The air raids on Darwin and other locations across northern Australia, the attacks on shipping along the east coast of Australia and the attack by Japanese midget submarines on Sydney Harbour were all part of that strategy.

To hear an account of this campaign and learn more about the audacious attack which proved to be a sharp wake-up call to Sydneysiders for whom the war had hitherto seemed somewhat distant, join Lieutenant Colonel Peter Sweeney RFD. Peter is a military historian and a battlefield guide and returns, by popular demand, to Blue Mountains Library for the 5th consecutive year to once again enlighten us on the details surrounding a critical time in Australian military history.

A FREE talk includes afternoon tea.
