Event description
The Hero's Journey - An exploration of 2020 through art, wine and food

About this Event

Art and wine goes hand in hand. Art, wine and food is a match made in heaven.

Inspired by the unprecedented worldwide events of the year 2020, The Hero’s Journey Art Prize is a time capsule exhibition and social experiment in one.

The Hero’s Journey Art Prize 2020 brought together the work of visual artists, graphic designers, and digital agencies to capture the essence of this historic year in the form of a poster.

To celebrate the exhibition of the 50 finalists of the Art Prize, we invite you to wine and dine in the premium artspace of aMBUSH Gallery in the Kambri Precinct. We're bringing you 4 Canberra wines and two winemakers who have also suffered through the horrors of 2020, to pour their wines and tell you the story of how they managed to survive one of the worst years in the history of the wine region.

Enjoy a 4 course dinner, curated by Bella of Bella's Feasts with matching wines from Lerida Estate, Lake George Winery, Gundog Estate and Four Winds.

Lerida Estate Prosecco on arrival with canape

Four Winds Vineyard 2020 Mataro rose with entree

Gundog Estate Wild Semillon with main course

Lake George Weereewa Red with cheese plate

For one night only, feel like a VIP as you sip Prosecco, immersed in the stories presented before you, on the walls of this pristine gallery, as the artists answer these question in art form - What special ‘powers’ do we need, and what will result from all this upheaval? Do we defeat our adversaries, or do they chase us as we flee? And what of the new life that emerges? Undoubtedly the quest will have changed us, but how?

The exhibition opens 5th November with all artworks available for sale from the 5th, with 100% of the proceeds going directly to the artist. Contact info@ambushgallery.com for the full catalogue.

What is The Hero's Journey 2020?

Curated and presented by aMBUSH Gallery, the exhibition will run from 3–15 November and feature the work of over 100 entrants.

The posters prompt the gamut of emotions, from the irreverent and humorous ‘Crapfest 2020’ by Trevor McDonald to the highly commended ‘and I tried to tell the flower’ by Pascale Giorgi that comments on nature’s brilliant indifference to our upheaval, and the emotional and poignant ‘The Road of Hope’ by Stella Evans, which tells a visual tale of her family and their rural farming community’s battle with drought, and was ultimately chosen by an independent panel of art judges (Jaklyn Babington from National Gallery of Australia, Dr Erica Seccombe from the Australian National University School of Art & Design and Oscar Capezio from the Australian National University Art Collection) as the winner of the AU$3,000 cash prize.
