About this event

The Henry Carmichael Lecture

Join us to celebrate the renaming and refurbishment of the Henry Carmichael Theatre, ahead of an informative lecture by Dr Lesley Scanlon.

The lecture will explore Henry Carmichael’s often controversial lifelong commitment to progressive education in the early settler society of NSW. Carmichael is recognised as the founder of the Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts, its guiding spirit, first Vice President and frequent lecturer. He was an indefatigable campaigner for the establishment of a secular, national education system and established the first teacher training institution. He also advocated a fully credentialed system of technical education. At the same time Carmichael was a successful winegrower at his Porphyry Estate in the Hunter Valley.

Free event, all welcome.
