Description

The Great Early Childhood Debate - Children’s Rights, Parents Rights, Educators Rights

Discussions in early childhood often centre on one facet of an issue. These discussions often attract words and phrases that we have adopted as a profession like ‘child centred learning’ or ‘children's interests’ or ‘parents are the first teachers’ and ‘we are all equal’. In this debate we will unpack such words and phrases that seem to have become the ‘answer’ to our professional discussions and pedagogical dilemmas.

We will begin this unpacking through a day of debate, discussion, deliberation and dissensus.

Special guest speakers include:

Rebecca Thompson - Stone & Sprocket
Dr Red Ruby Scarlet - MultiVerse
Stephen Gallen - Consultant
Katchia Avenell - Consultant
Louise Dorrat - Consultant
Anthony Semann - Semann & Slattery

The Great Early Childhood Debate will consist of two formal debates presented in good old fashioned ‘affirmative’ and ‘negative’ styles. Keeping in mind the tension between children’s rights, families rights and educators rights, the two topics of debate are:

  • Celebrations - should they be part of early childhood curriculum? Who decides?

  • Art and craft - body painting, stencils and paper plates - how are these valid and valuable and creative learning experiences? Who decides?

In the the second part of the day we offer our very own early childhood Q&A! This is an opportunity for you to raise issues for a looser kind of debate where you can pose questions to any of speakers on the panel. To make the day flow it is best to get your Q&A questions in when you register.

Here are a few themes that have been raised so far:

  • Is early childhood really a space for politics?

  • Qualifications vs experience

  • Are we professionals? Experts?

  • Is everyone a teacher?

  • Social Media as professional development - who is the expert?

  • Marriage equality and all that gender stuff is it relevant?

  • Politicians part in writing curriculum why do they get to decide?

  • Public opinion and how it shapes curriculum are we obligated to include this perspective?

  • Defending pedagogy whilst partnering with families
