Event description

Description

Held in the lead-up to the United Nations 3rd High Level Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), this policy forum will provide the opportunity to examine the ‘best-buys’ identified by the World Health Organisation for nations to tackle NCDs for their local populations.

Too many people die prematurely from cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes. These four diseases account for more than 80% of premature deaths and they are largely preventable through public policies that tackle four main risk factors: tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diets and physical inactivity.

Australia has many world-class prevention initiatives to showcase as global examples of how to address the non-communicable disease burden. However, there is more we can do as a nation to address the increasing prevalence of key risk factors in the Australian population.
