The Garden of Music

An afternoon of exploratory music with Simone de Haan (trombone) Rhys Butler (alto sax), Ben Drury (double bass), Alexander Hunter (viola de gamba), Richard Johnson (wind instruments).

“All a musician can do is get closer to the sources of nature, and so feel that he is in communion with the natural laws” John Coltrane

Inspired by the exquisite unfolding of nature, The Garden of Music explores the relationships between the musicians - and between the sounds themselves – as the music making takes on a life of its own and resonates around the exquisite and intimate Drill Hall Gallery. All of this with no stated purpose or intent, except for the musicians to come together and engage in a spontaneous conversation with each other and their listeners. Come and join us - there will be something special for you to see and hear - as the music unfolds in the moment of performance!

“Artists talk a lot about freedom. So, recalling the expression "free as a bird," Morton Feldman went to a park one day and spent some time watching our feathered friends. When he came back, he said, "You know? They're not free: they're fighting over bits of food.” John Cage, Silence: Lectures and Writings

Simone de Haan has been active as an improviser since the early 80’s and performed and recorded with Jon Rose, Jim Denley, Scott Tinkler, Elliott Dalgleish, Daryl Pratt, Simon Barker, Phil Treloar, David Addes, Kenny Wheeler, Mark Simmonds, David Tolley, Tenzin Choegyal, Ren Walters, Luc Houtkamp, Guus Janssen, Raoul Van der Weide, Michael Vatcher, William Duckworth and Stuart Dempster, amongst others. Simone has also performed with the Relative Band, Cathedral Band, Pipeline and whilst resident in Amsterdam in 1986 was a member of the Maarten Altena Octet and Future Shock.

TICKETS available at the door unless sold out prior to the event.
