Event description
Join us to celebrate the success of smart justice in the heart of the Kimberley and learn about the future of justice reinvestment in WA.

About this Event

We acknowledge the Whadjuk Noongar people as the traditional custodians of the land on which this event will be hosted on. We value the oldest continuing culture in the world and pay our respect to the First People of this country, Elders past and present, and throughout Australia.

In the heart of the Kimberley, Olabud Doogethu is Western Australia’s first justice reinvestment site. Situated in Halls Creek, WA, Olabud Doogethu (which means ‘All of us together’ in Kriol) was co-developed and is led by 11 Aboriginal communities working together to create opportunities for their youth with a focus on community-based diversion from the criminal justice system, rehabilitation and early intervention.

Olabud Doogethu is an example of the future of justice reinvestment in WA. Since it began in May 2019, Halls Creek has seen: 58% reduction in burglaries; 35% reduction in stolen motor vehicles; and 28% in stealing offences.

On 26 November 2020, join us for this public event to learn more about justice reinvestment in Western Australia directly from the Aboriginal leaders working on Olabud Doogethu in the Shire of Halls Creek;

And the future system transformation required to build healthier families, safer communities, and smarter justice from Social Reinvestment WA.

This event will include:

  • Exclusive short film screening and Q&A with Leaders of Olabud Doogethu: WA's First Justice Reinvestment Site

The launch of a short documentary film highlighting the work of Olabud Doogethu in Halls Creek, filmed in September 2020; followed by a live Q&A discussion with key Aboriginal leaders from Olabud Doogethu.

  • Aboriginal Art exhibition and silent auction

This exhibition will include a silent auction with exclusive Aboriginal art created by artists from Halls Creek, with money donated to the ongoing advocacy work of SRWA.

  • Presentation on Justice Reinvestment + Q&A

A presentation on the importance of Justice Reinvestment and launch of justice reinvestment resources by Social Reinvestment WA Campaign Coordinator, Sophie Stewart.

  • Update on the Work of Social Reinvestment WA

A presentation by Co-Chairs Glenda Kickett and Daniel Morrison on the key work of Social Reinvestment WA to date, and the direction our coalition is headed as we continue to tackle the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in WA's justice system.

This event is brought to you by Social Reinvestment WA, in partnership with Olabud Doogethu and the Shire of Halls Creek.
