Event description

Description

You are invited to join us for the launch of our latest exhibition, ‘The Edmund Gill Collection’.

Edmund Gill (1908-1986) was an internationally acclaimed scientist, particularly interested in the geology of the Western and coastal Victoria regions.

Deakin’s Edmund Gill Collection consists of field notebooks, detail and aerial photographs, colour slides, maps, manuscripts, and reprints of the 388 scientific papers documenting his research. The materials cover key topics such as sea level changes and marine processes, palaeontology, geology, aboriginal prehistory and archaeology, and volcanic deposits.

Join us for the exhibition launch:

  • 2:30-3:30 pm, Thursday, 31 August
  • Warrnambool Campus Library, Deakin University, Building B, Sherwood Park, Warrnambool
  • Afternoon tea to follow

Our launch event will include addresses from guest speakers:

Dr Craig Anderson, Deakin’s University Librarian, will introduce the exhibition, and discuss Deakin’s special collections, digitisation projects and future plans.

Dr Malcolm Gill – son of Edmund Gill – will share Gill family stories and speak about his father’s attributes as a researcher, and the significant focus on the Western District of Victoria. Malcom is a retired scientist who spent nearly three decades at CSIRO followed by an Honorary appointment at ANU.

John Sherwood is an Honorary Associate Profession in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences, following his retirement in 2011. He will share stories about his time in Warrnambool, working as a field assistant with Edmund Gill, and the research papers the pair later published about western Victoria’s geology.

Derek Walters is a geologist who received first class honours in 2015 for his thesis “A sedimentary facies analysis of the Dennington Member (Bridgewater Formation) at Thunder Point Warrnambool, Victoria". His work involved a geological analysis and description of the Bridgewater Formation, and he utilised the Edmund Gill Collection extensively in his research.
