The Edge of Chaos | A Winemakers Conundrum
Event Information
About this event
To celebrate the release of Cake Wines' 2018 Barbera titled the Edge of Chaos, this event is an exploration into the idea of the ‘Edge of Chaos’, and its application to the art and science of winemaking. Hosted by Mike Bennie, freelance wine and drinks writer, journalist and presenter, with a global reputation for being at the forefront of contemporary wine discussion, alongside some of Adelaide's most forward thinking winemakers.
A well documented scientific state, the 'edge of chaos' is referred to as the most "creative state" we as humans can operate in. The edge of chaos, by definition, is used to denote a transition space between order and disorder that is hypothesized to exist within a wide variety of systems. These are systems that can be organized to perform complex computations, to react to the world, to be spontaneous, adaptive, and alive. Truly creative changes and the big shifts occur right at the edge of chaos. Push to far...and failure is imminent, remain too passive and mediocre output is likely.
From a winemaking perspective, the push and pull surrounding the Edge of Chaos is commonplace. How far is to far? When do we need to rein it in? Does operating at the edge of chaos produce the best wine? A worthy conundrum up for discussion with a panel of young exciting winemakers from the region. Standby as we announce the winemakers.
