Event description

Description

The Cost of Not Counting is a two hour workshop that provides parents and interested teachers with an enhanced understanding of the theory of dyscalculia. We will demonstrate multi-sensory, concrete manipulatives that attendees can use with children who have either dyscalculia or low numeracy.

This 'demonstration' style workshop provides an introduction to help parents and teachers further their understanding of dyscalculia, and how it affects children, while providing strategies they can use to help them.

Workshop Overview

Dyscalculia causes a significant impact on those who have it, with self-confidence and self-esteem being sorely affected, and maths anxiety often ensuing.

This workshop provides an insight into the neuroscience behind dyscalculia, while also addressing its impact on the self-belief system. Around 5% of the population is affected by dyscalculia, and many who are affected by it find themselves impacted by other developmental disorders - otherwise known as 'co-morbidity'. A frequently cited statistic of this notes that approximately 50% of those with dyslexia are likely to also have dyscalculia. If, for example, dyslexia is identified in a child first, their difficulties with maths are attributed to the already identified developmental disorder, and so any strategies and interventions to help the child who also has dyscalculia are not implemented.

Over the course of this workshop, we will demonstrate games and activities that parents can undertake at home, and that teachers can make use of to support those with dyslexia or low numeracy in the classroom.
