Event description

Description

The Comics of Life is a dynamic conversation with local artists whose works largely respond to lived experience in cartoon form. This event will feature Safdar Ahmed, artist and founding member of the Refugee Art Project and contributor to Advice Comics, an online cartoon advice column. He will be joined by Dulwich Hill based artist, Karen Beilharz, who produced Kinds of Blue, an anthology of comics about depression and more recently, Monsters, an anthology for children. The artists will be joined by Comics guru Stephen Ford to discuss their practice and the power of comics to express human condition.

Safdar Ahmed is a Sydney-based artist and academic. https://safdarahmed.com/my-comics-and-zines/

In 2010 he completed his PhD with the Department of Arabic and Islamic studies at the University of Sydney. Before that, Safdar completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Sydney’s National Art School. He works largely in the mediums of drawing, comics and watercolour. He is a founding member of the Refugee Art Project, for which he conducts art workshops with refugees and asylum seekers in detention. This organization was founded to facilitate art workshops for detained asylum seekers, and to display their work in public exhibitions. Detainees would be able to express themselves through the medium of art, and to convey something of their experiences to the broader Australian community. The Refugee Art Project aims to deepen public understanding about the asylum seeker issue and the realities of Australia’s detention regime. In 2015 Safdar won a Walkley Award in the Artwork category for his documentary webcomic, Villawood: Notes from an Immigration Detention Centre. Karen Beilharz is a Sydney-based writer, editor and comics creator, best known for her work on Kinds of Blue: An anthology of short comics about depression and Eternal Life, a science fiction graphic novel with Paul Wong-Pan. She has recently published an anthology of short comics for children called Monsters. http://hivemindedness.com/
