The Chapel Perilous

By Dorothy Hewett

Directed by Alice Darling

Sally Banner, the heroine of The Chapel Perilous (written in 1971), is widely regarded as the first liberated woman to appear on the Australian stage. Sally Banner is on a quest to know herself deeply, and to choose her own path, without concession, whatever the consequences. It is testament to Hewitt’s insight and level of formal experimentation that the Chapel Perilous still speaks daringly and defiantly to us today. The play makes absolutely plain the insidious and shrewdly exacted, personal and social cost to women who buck the system and refuse to cave in to social expectations.
