The Building Blocks of Romance Fiction

Romance fiction is arguably the world’s most popular genre, with millions of readers clamouring for new releases from favourite authors. Join award-winning, internationally published historical romance author Anna Campbell as she reveals a great love story’s building blocks. We’ll cover essential elements, including genres within the genre, structure, pacing, characters, conflict, openings, turning points, black moments, love scenes, dialogue—and the blissfully happy ending! Participants will complete structured writing exercises to develop hands-on skills in telling stories to make readers’ hearts beat faster. This promises to be a fun, information-packed workshop to help you write your bestseller with confidence.

Learning Outcomes

  • Participants will leave the workshop with a good understanding of the structure of the romance novel, with specific relevance to their current project

  • Participants will develop technical skills to address structural problems in their story

About Anna Campbell

Queenslander Anna Campbell has written 10 multi award-winning historical romances, set in the first quarter of the nineteenth century for HarperCollins and Hachette. She has also independently released 15 bestselling novellas. Her work is now published in 18 languages. Since selling her first published novel at auction to HarperCollins US in 2006, she has written full-time. Anna regularly mentors other writers in technical skills, romance and commercial fiction, and has conducted successful training courses in Australia and internationally.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

This course is for participants aged 18 years and above. If you are accessing the QWC member tickets you may be asked to show proof of membership.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Queensland Writers Centre is located on Level 2 of the State Library of Queensland.

There are several parking and transportation options:

  • Parking underneath State Library or Queensland Museum costs $16 per entry.
  • There is limited street parking available on Merivale Street, Montague Road and Hope Street at an hourly rate.
  • A drop-off point is located on the ring road outside SLQ, next to the bus stops.
  • The Cultural Precinct BusWay and South Brisbane Train Station are a short walk from State Library.

What can I bring into the event?

You can bring either pen and paper or a laptop along with you to write with. If you do bring a laptop, please remember to bring a power adaptor if necessary.

The venue runs quite a cool air-conditioning system so we advise bringing a jacket, jumper or cardigan with you.

What's the refund policy?

If Queensland Writers Centre cancels an event, we will try to reschedule it for a later date. If we cannot reschedule the event, or if you are unable to attend on the amended date, your payment will be refunded in full.
