Event description

Description

The Disruptive Business Network and Humanities 21 are thrilled to announce the launch of the Boo Radley Bookclub: where business and the humanities intersect.

What lessons can businesspeople learn from literature? The Boo Radley Book Club will answer this question by interrogating classic books on topics such as public policy, welfare, and morality.

Why this book club?

The way we do business has evolved since the industrial revolution. As we move away from systems put in place in the early 20th century, the new currency is ideas. Blind efficiency needs to replaced with empathy, marketing with storytelling, and duty with integrity.

Literature is valuable to businesspeople because it offers alternative modes of thinking and enables us to understand how our world works from a number of perspectives. In our new age of business, which is increasingly becoming international and therefore operates in a number of different cultures and contexts, this skill is paramount.

Why Boo Radley? [SPOILER ALERT]

Boo Radley is a character in To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee – our June book at the Boo Radley Book Club.

Boo Radley is a recluse who never ventures outdoors and at the start of the book is a figure of fear, mystery, and fascination to the young narrator.

As the story progresses, his kindness is revealed, and both readers and the narrator realise they have misunderstood his actions and demeanour.

Can Boo Radley’s character be a metaphor for the role of the humanities in the business world?

Details of Event

The Boo Radley Book Club will be held on the last Thursday of every month at the Henley Club, starting on Thursday 29th June.

Participants are welcome to arrive at the Henley Club any time from 5.30pm, when drinks and nibbles will be served. Book club discussion will commence at 6pm, and go for an hour or so.

Your $12 cover charge includes wine, beer, and nibbles. Please advise if you have any dietary requirements (email Maeve from Humanities 21 at maeve@humanities21.com.au or Rahul from Disruptive Business Network on Rahul@disruptivebusinessnetwork.com).

Each month the Boo Radley Book Club will discuss one fascinating novel. The book clubs will be led by members from the Humanities 21 Student Engagement and Advisory Committee, all of whom will draw out the most enticing themes in each book.

Please note that there is a limit of 20 participants at each book club, so that everyone has the opportunity to share their insights. Come one, come all – you don’t have to have studied literature OR business to be at home at the Boo Radley Book Club!
