The Big Punchbowl open dayThe Tasmanian Land Conservancy invites you to an open day at The Big Punchbowl.

You are invited to the TLC’s newest reserve-in-the-making.

The Big Punchbowl, on Tasmania’s east coast, is 240 hectares of ephemeral wetlands and coastal vegetation. It is adjacent to Moulting Lagoon and opposite the TLC’s first ever permanent reserve at Long Point.  With generous help from the public, the TLC is actively working towards protecting this area as our next permanent conservation reserve.

On Saturday, February 28 we will be hosting an open day at The Big Punchbowl, featuring ecological and cultural heritage interpretation, and guided walks throughout the property.

Come and join us to explore this beautiful place and get a taste of the special values that make us want to preserve this place forever!

Event information

Getting there
The Big Punchbowl is quite a long drive (2.75hrs from Hobart, 2.5hrs from Launceston) so we recommend driving up the Friday before and staying in the Coles Bay area. TLC actively supports carpooling. Please indicate if you can offer or would like a lift when you register.

For local accommodation options, visit We can highly recommend making enquiries at:

They have a minimum 2 night stay policy but will donate 10% of your accommodation payment to the TLC. Just mention that you are TLC supporters when booking.
  • Andrea’s Cottage or Shucker’s Cottage.  These conveniently located eco-friendly stays are run by Andrea, a lovely TLC supporter. She has kindly offered a nominal discount to TLC supporters (conditions apply) so please inform them that you are with the TLC.

Time and meeting place
We will all meet at 10.00am sharp at The Big Punchbowl which is situated along Flacks Road (Turn off Coles Bay Road 10.8km North of Coles Bay, 16.2km South of Tasman Hwy A3). Both the turn-off and the way to The Big Punchbowl will be well signposted. We will aim to conclude the open day by around 3.00pm allowing plenty of time before dark for those departing immediately after the open day to make the return drive home.

Guided walks
The guided walks around The Big Punchbowl will be conducted at a gentle pace and will be approximately 3.5 hours long, including many rest breaks. It’s suitable for people with moderate fitness and reasonable mobility. The walk is mostly flat terrain and will be approximately 5 kilometers long.

The walks will be led by knowledgable TLC staff and participants will have the chance to hear from and talk to wildlife and ecology experts who will bring the stories of this fascinating landscape, it's processes and it's inhabitants vividly to life.

If you would like to attend but have limited fitness and mobility, please still register and we can explore tailoring an experience to suit you.

Something for the kids!
We are conducting a children's walk and nature activities for all your budding young naturalists. This activity will be led by an experienced children's nature workshop facilitator and offers a fun way to learn about The Big Punchbowl's fauna and flora! Suitable for ages 5 to 13 years.

This is a free event although donations will be gratefully accepted.  All donations will go towards the purchase, protection and long term management of The Big Punchbowl.
