This Award has been named in honour of the Right Reverend John Bayton AM for his significant contribution to the development of the Rockhampton Art Gallery collection. Installed as Dean of Rockhampton in 1968 and an artist in his own right, Rt Rev Bayton was the Chair of the Gallery’s Art Acquisition Fund in 1975. Together with Gallery committee members including then Mayor Rex Pilbeam, Architect Neil McKendry and Gallery Director Don Taylor, Rt Rev Bayton was responsible for the selection and purchase of important mid-twentieth century paintings, sculpture and works on paper. This collection is arguably the finest in regional Queensland. The Bayton Award is a joint initiative between the Rockhampton Art Gallery Trust, Rockhampton Art Gallery, and Rockhampton Regional Council.
