Description

Kincumber Library will host a presentation by retired Lieutenant Colonel Peter Sweeney RFD entitled ‘The Battle of Fromelles’.

The Battle of Fromelles, fought on 19th July 1916, was the first battle on the Western Front for the 1st AIF following the evacuation from Gallipoli.

The aim of the battle was to stop the Germans reinforcing the area of the Somme where the British assault commenced on 1st July.

The attack failed and the Australians suffered heavy casualties.

Peter is a military historian and a battlefield guide. He is studying a Master’s degree in Military History at the ADFA campus of UNSW. He has guided in Gallipoli and Australian battlefields on the Western Front - Fromelles, Villers-Bretonneux, Poziers and Polygon Wood.

He is an enrichment speaker on Australian military history on cruises to the South Pacific. His next engagement is on the Sun Princess cruise in November this year which will visit Milne bay and Guadalcanal.

He is co-owner of the battlefield touring company Battle Honours Australia Pty Ltd which conducts significant WWII sites around Sydney and arranges walking tours of Australian Battlefields worldwide.

Doors open at 6pm for a 6.30pm start. Finish time an approximation only.
