Description

Library expedition 1
Presenter: Jan MacDonald

State Library Victoria has recently been able to complete its set of The Banks’ florilegium after acquiring a set of the plates covering the Australian plants described by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander and illustrated by Sydney Parkinson during the first of James Cook’s voyages of exploration. Jan McDonald, Rare Books Librarian, will show off some of the magnificent plates in the florilegium and place them in the context of the development of scientific botanical illustration in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Jan McDonald is the State Library Victoria’s Rare Books Librarian. She has a fascination with the development of scientific botanical illustration in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Presented as part of Melbourne Rare Book Week.
