Join popular raconteur, journalist and best-selling author Peter FitzSimons as he brings to life one of Australia’s pivotal World War One battleground experiences, as revealed in his latest book Victory at Villers-Bretonneux.
In April 1918, overwhelmed and exhausted by a sustained attack by two million German soldiers, the British forces called upon support from Australian troops in the defence of the French town of Villers-Bretonneux.
Arriving just in time, the Australians succeeded in launching a vicious counterattack which hurled the Germans army back - leading eventually to a decisive victory and protecting the strategic town of Amiens and vital allied supplies. To this day the ANZACs are fondly remembered by the inhabitants and the primary school at Villers-Bretonneux has inscribed above each of its blackboards: ‘N’oublions jamais, l’Australie’ - never forget Australia.
