Event description

Description

Join award-winning New Zealand based author Fiona Sussman as she discusses her novel The Last Time We Spoke.

Set in the rural outskirts of Auckland it is an unflinching and moving account of how a mother tries to reconcile her son’s murder with help from his young murderer. Eighteen year old Jack, the victim, is from a white middle class family. His sixteen year old killer, Ben Torora, is of Maori descent. A gang member, he has been raised in poverty by a mother who is a victim of domestic violence.

The book explores issues of race, the lingering legacies of British colonialism and the negative effect of being alienated from one’s culture. Peeling back stereotypes, it affirms the human ability to transcend circumstance, while finding light in dark places.

Books will be available for purchase on the night.
