Event description
Be inspired in this hands-on workshop with Katie and Helen, exploring the ecology and pigment art of the fascinating Esperance sandplains.

About this event

Science and art are blended perfectly in this exciting new workshop with artist Helen Coleman and ecologist Katie White. Over two days, participants will explore the beauty and ecology of the stunning Esperance sandplains and discover how to create art, from earth and plant materials hand gathered, transformed into forms used to draw and paint.

The Esperance sandplains are globally renowned for the unique, beautiful, complex and highly diverse wildflowers. This Biodiversity Hotspot is home to over 2,500 vascular plants.

Beginning with a guided walk in pristine Esperance bushland with Katie White, botanist and lover of all things natural, you will explore the tiny intricate patterns and details that define wildflowers to the broad scale ecological changes that define the landscape.

As you make notes and explore the wonder of ecological science, we will be gathering plant and earth samples. Back at the Cannery Arts Centre, Helen will then show you how to transform these raw materials into ink and paint mediums. Techniques to be explored include water and alcohol-based plant pigment extraction, ink testing and modification, levigation of earth pigments and mulling glair and tempera paints.

In the final half day session, participants will use these handmade inks and paints to create unique nature journals, recording your natural history observations with the colours of Esperance.

The perspective of the natural environment is all in the eyes of the beholder - a place of immense beauty, a place of refuge, a place of resource, a place of creative inspiration, a place of neutrality, a place of curiosity and change. Helen Coleman and Katie White are two women that connect to the natural environment in very different ways and wish to explore in tandem the merging of the art of science and the science of art.

We hope you can join us!
