The Art of Lunch

Yarra City Council and Artbank are presenting a series of talks with First Nations artists to talk about art and activism over a long lunch highlighting native ingredients.

Over two Sundays in an intimate setting at Aunty Kim’s, we invite you to meet some great artists and get to know them and their work over a shared lunch prepared by Executive chef Noah Crowcroft from Rice Paper and Scissors.

The ticket includes a multicourse feast and a glass of sparkling on arrival. Please let us know if you have special dietary requirements when you book. Beverages can be purchased separately.

• Akoya oyster (WA), finger lime dressing (gluten free)

• Smoked eel, coconut, and chilli, on betel leaf (gluten free)

• Kangaroo tartare, native pepper berries, persimmon, smoked egg yolk, wattleseed lavosh

• Port Arlington mussels, Tom Kha, native seagrass (gluten free)

• Warrigal greens, local pine mushrooms, XO sauce

• Western Plains pork shoulder, honey, lemon thyme, Davidson plum jam

• Steamed jasmine rice

• Blood orange and bitter chocolate tart, passionfruit & dessert lime sorbet

Mia Boe

Mia Boe is a painter from Brisbane, with Butchulla and Burmese ancestry. The inheritance and 'disinheritance' of both of these cultures focus her work. Mia's paintings respond, sometimes obliquely, to Empire’s deliberate, violent interferences with the cultural heritages of Burma and K’gari (Fraser Island).

Mia's art practice records and recovers Indigenous histories which Australia seeks to deny. This practice of recovery is urgent in contemporary Australia: the patient work of tracing historical trauma and violence can open new perspectives on the reasons for Aboriginal Australians' present suffering.

Lowell Hunter

Lowell Hunter is a proud Nyul Nyul Saltwater man from the Kimberley's in Western Australia, who grew up on Gunditjmara Country in Warrnambool, and now lives on Wathaurong Country, Geelong. Although far apart, each of these special places have kept Lowell strongly connected to the ocean his whole life.Lowell creates sand art and uses drone photography to capture the scale of his works within breathtaking landscapes, which all started simply, as a way for him to get out and connect with culture, Country and sea.

Using only his feet, Lowell carves stories into the sand using the same foot movements he was taught through Traditional dance movements his people have practised for countless generations. Lowell’s artworks tell stories of family, identity and connection.
