Description

Welcome to the AI Lounge

'There are few other human inventions that are likely to have as large an impact on our lives as machines that can think... The steam engine liberated our muscles; the computer is set to liberate our minds.' – Toby Walsh, It's Alive!

AI will catalyse the most dramatic shift in human society since the industrial revolution, argues Toby Walsh (CSIRO, UNSW) in his new book It's Alive! Artificial intelligence from the logic piano to killer robots.

As the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI) comes to Melbourne, join Toby and a host of international experts for nightly events tackling the biggest issues of the day. From economics and politics to the nature of consciousness and humanity itself, nothing is off the table in the AI Lounge.

PROGRAM

Is the singularity near?
Monday 21 August, 6pm to 7pm
Will computers become super intelligent? And, if they continue to self-improve, where might it all end? Join Jan Feyereisl (AI Roadmap Institute) and Kevin Korb (Monash University) to discuss a mind-bending idea that might be more science than fiction.

Book launch: It's Alive!
Tuesday 22 August, 6pm to 7pm
To celebrate the launch of It's Alive! Artificial intelligence from the logic piano to killer robots, join your host Mel Campbell and author Toby Walsh on a surprising and inspiring journey through the past, the present - and into the future of AI.

Killer robots: the future of war?
Wednesday 23 August, 6pm to 7pm
Are robots about to transform war? Will robots fight robots? Are these the next weapons of mass destruction - and what is the UN trying to do about it? Join Ugo Pagallo (University of Turin), Stuart Russell (University of California) and Margaret Beavis (Medical Association for the Prevention of War) to find out.

The end of work?
Thursday 24 August, 6pm to 7pm

Will automation put many people out of work? What are the jobs of the future? Will we need to introduce radical changes like Universal Basic Income? Stefan Hajkowicz (CSIRO) and Rao Kambhampati (Arizona State University) tackle these big questions and more.

Q&AI: your questions answered
Friday 25 August, 6pm to 7pm

After a big week in the AI Lounge, there will still be so many questions begging for an answer - so here's your chance to ask an expert. Tuomas Sandholm (Carnegie Mellon Unversity) and Devi Parikh (Facebook AI Research) will be in the hot seats.

FREE ENTRY. Doors open at 5.30pm. Events start at 6pm sharp. Register on Eventbrite or email us to book a ticket for one or more events.

The AI Lounge is presented by IJCAI-17, Melbourne Conversations and the Centre on Impact of AI and Robotics (CIAIR).
