Description

The Age’s Richard Baker recently released Wrong Skin, a crime investigation podcast series about the cold case of Julie Buck and her boyfriend, Richard Milgin, who vanished from a remote Aboriginal community in the Kimberley region of WA. This is Richard’s second investigative podcast following the award-winning Phoebe’s Fall, a series on the short life and brutal death of Phoebe Handsjuk.

Hosted by editor Alex Lavelle, join us for an in conversation with Richard on his acclaimed podcasts. We also welcome special guest Sophie Black from The Wheeler Centre on the panel with Richard. Sophie is Head of Publishing at The Wheeler Centre where she has worked on the Walkley award-winning podcast, The Messenger.

With podcasts emerging as a popular new platform for storytelling, Richard and Sophie will discuss what makes audio stories so compelling and also share behind-the-scenes insights on their successful podcasts.

Speaker Profiles



Alex Lavelle - Host

Alex Lavelle has been editor of the Age since May, 2016. He has worked at the Age since 1999, when he left Mirror Group newspapers in London for Melbourne. He started in the sports department, becoming Sunday Age sports editor in 2006 and sports editor in 2011, leading the Fairfax Media team at the London Olympics in 2012. Alex moved to the news desk as deputy news director in 2015 before being appointed editor the following year. Alex was confirmed as the editor of The Age newsroom in February.



Richard Baker - Panelist

Richard Baker is one of Australia's most experienced and decorated investigative journalists, with 12 years in The Age newspaper's investigative unit. He has many times been the recipient of Australia's major journalism awards, including multiple Walkleys, the Melbourne Press Club's gold quill and more than a dozen other quills, a Kennedy award and the George Munster prize for independent journalism. Together with colleague Nick McKenzie, Richard has broken major international and national corruption scandals. He also writes regularly on politics, business, crime, sports affairs, defence and intelligence and social affairs. In 2016, he created and co-hosted the awarding winning six part podcast series, Phoebe's Fall.



Sophie Black - Panelist

Sophie Black is Head of Publishing at the Wheeler Centre where she’s worked on projects such as the writers scheme The Next Chapter, Walkley award winning The Messenger podcast and the ABC Radio National program Talkfest.

Previously she was Editor in Chief at Private Media, where she headed up Crikey, Daily Review and SmartCompany. In 2013 she delivered the Adelaide Festival of Ideas as Director. Sophie is the former editor of Crikey and regularly appears on ABC local radio and television, most recently on ABC TV's Screen Time
