Description

Registration closing date has been extended to 24th August 2019

Welcome to The Miles Franklin Music Festival 2019! Our annual Festival has run since 1986, and is a competitive but inclusive opportunity for students aged 7-15 to perform on a range of instruments in a supportive environment. The Festival is run by volunteers from the school’s P&C Music Scheme, and celebrates young musicians of all ages and stages, placing an emphasis on participation and camaraderie through a shared love of music.

Before registering please read the full Section Listing and the Conditions of Entry and Festival Rules, especially those relating to time limits and copyright requirements.

FAQs

Which section/s should I enter?

Please see the Section Listing drop down menu on the ticket order page and listed below

How long do I need to play for?

Please see the Section Listing as well as Conditions of Entry and Festival Rules

How do I know when I will be performing?

After entries have closed and the schedule is finalized, copies of the programme will be emailed to entrants. Printed copies of the programme will be available during the Festival for purchase.

Is my registration/ticket transferable?

Competitor registrations are non-transferable. Please see the Festival Rules regarding performer substitutions in group sections.

Do I have to bring my ticket to the event?

Please print and bring your ticket to the event, or alternatively present your e-ticket on a mobile device at the door.

I am attending the event to watch a performance, do I need a ticket?

Yes, family members and spectators will need to purchase a Family Attendance Pass through this event page in order to watch performances on the day. One Family Attendance Pass covers the immediate family members of the competitor OR an individual spectator not coming as part of a competitor's family, for the duration of the Festival. Music teachers come for free and do not need to register.

The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?

Please ensure the name on the ticket matches the performer's name.

I have already completed my registration and ticket order but have realised I made a mistake. Can I update or change order details?

Yes, you should be able to go back and update or change details even after purchase. You can update the information on your order (like name, email address, or answers to the organiser's questions) by clicking your order on the Tickets page - you must be logged in to do so.

What can I win by entering?

The Festival's ethos is to promote participation rather than competition, so traditionally we do not award monetary or other prizes. Instead, place ribbons and participation certificates are awarded and all competitors receive an adjudicator's report to help them in their musical journey.

What is the refund policy?

Performer registrations and family tickets are non-refundable.

MILES FRANKLIN MUSIC FESTIVAL 2019

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY & FESTIVAL RULES

1. The Miles Franklin Music Festival is a longstanding event run in the spirit of community participation. Although there is a competitive element, the event emphasises camaraderie and a shared love of music, and relies on the generosity of hardworking volunteer organisers to run each year. It is expected that competitors, their teachers, family and audience respect this ethos in all dealings with the Festival, its organisers and Miles Franklin Primary School. The Festival organisers reserve the right to limit participation in the Festival where this is deemed not to be the case.

2. All sections will be conducted at Miles Franklin Primary School on 21st and 22nd September 2019.

3. All enquiries about the Festival should be directed to the Festival organisers at mfpmusicfestival@outlook.com or at the Festival Facebook page, and not to Miles Franklin Primary School or its staff.

4. The Festival organisers reserve the right to:

a. refuse or disqualify any entry;

b. cancel a section due to insufficient entries;

c. request proof of age;

d. amalgamate or divide any sections where necessary due to number of competitors;

e. exclude participants for not acting within the spirit of the Festival or for not adhering to Festival rules.

5. Entries close on Friday 18th August 2019. No late entries will be accepted. The organisers may extend the closing date at their discretion and only in exceptional circumstances.

6. All sections are own choice of music. Entrants are not required to nominate their chosen music when registering but should pay close attention to time limits (see below) when choosing their music.

7. The age limit of competitors shall be taken as their age on the 21st September 2019.

8. No competitor may enter more than one solo section on the same instrument, and a competitor may not enter any one section more than once.

9. Each competitor is to play one piece only in the section in which he or she has entered.

10. Instrumental categories: for the purposes of this festival, ‘String’ refers to violin, viola, cello, double bass and other bowed string instruments; ‘Guitar’ includes acoustic or electric guitar, ukeleles and other horizontally held strummed instruments; and ‘Keyboard’ refers to electric keyboard or digital piano.

11. The Festival is unable to provide sound gear for amplification of performances.

12. The sections listed below are the only sections available in 2019. No changes to sections or time limits will be made at the request of entrants.

13. No player substitutions will be allowed in group sections after the closing date.

14. Except where the competitor is playing from memory, it is a copyright requirement that a performer must play from an original or authorised copy of the music.

15. Provision of photocopied music to the adjudicator is a condition of participation. A photocopy of the competitor’s music must be handed in at the adjudicator’s table at the beginning of each section. These photocopies will be destroyed following the performance, in accordance with copyright laws. Please note that no photocopy facilities will be available at the Festival, and failure to provide the adjudicator with a photocopy of the music may result in disqualification.

16. Accompaniment is not mandatory but competitors must provide their own accompaniment where they wish to perform with accompaniment.

17. Time limits: Restricting performances to the allocated time limit is an important performance skill that we encourage competitors to learn. Competitors are strongly encouraged to time their performances before the Festival to ensure they are within the time limit for their section/s. In addition:

- The time limits given in the Section Listing are for whole performances, inlcuding recorded or live accompaniment but not including setup and tuning time.

- Failure to adhere to time limits may result in disqualification. Prizes will not be awarded to competitors whose performances exceed time limits.

- There is no requirement that performers use the whole time allocation in their performance, however performances must not run past the time allocation.

- Unless otherwise specified in the Section Listing, age groups up to and including 12 years & Under have a time limit of 2 minutes, and age groups 13 years and Under and 14 years & Under have a time limit of 3 minutes. In sections where time limits have been extended, repeat markings should not be observed.

- If a competitor exceeds the allotted time, the timekeeper may ring a bell and judgement will be made on the performance as heard up to the time limit.

- It is in the competitor’s interest to shorten any accompaniment, whether recorded or live, to stay within the time limit. Eg, accompaniment introductions that go beyond the item time limit will result in the competitor being disqualified before he/she has started to play.

18. The adjudicator's report will be available to competitors after the completion of each section. Places and Certificates of High Commendation will be awarded at the discretion of the adjudicator. The adjudicators' decisions on the day are final and no discussion or correspondence will be entered into.
