Event description

Description

As part of Sydney Design Festival 2018 Textile Tactics: Speculate, Debate, Make. is a textile focused program developed to generate critical debate and practice that calls into action future design scenarios as we face urgent environmental challenges in the 21st century. We ask ‘What could textiles look like in the future as science, design and technology merge?’

Through a hands-on textiles lab lead by innovative researchers and designers at UNSW Art & Design, participants are called into action and introduced to a range of emergent bio-materials that have been ‘grown’ such as mycelium based textile composites, fermented microbial materials and bio-plastics (algae based). Participants will not only be able to see how these textiles have been made but will be able to generate hybridised experiments using the materials provided and a range of ‘traditional’ surface design techniques such as embroidery, beading, dying, weaving and piecing. Outcomes will be tactile, speculative, critical and open-ended, initiating a making process that poses questions about the future of textiles.

To continue the conversation, a panel of five key players from the fashion, academic and science worlds will speculate and debate the next frontier of fabric. Proposed panelists include Dr. Patricia Flanagan, (Experimental textile researcher and practitioner, UNSW A&D), Dr. Clara Vuletich (fashion and sustainability strategist), Dr. Guy Keulemans (multi-disciplinary designer and researcher with a focus on sustainability, UNSW A&D) and Professor Melissa Knothe Tate (leading expert on cell biology and advanced materials, UNSW).

Come speculate, debate and make with us!
