Event description

Description

Robbie Rowlands works with existing objects and spaces in a practice that seeks to renegotiate the empirical by challenging the way we see the world. In his work we find the structures that provide support to our lives have themselves become wilted and prone. Rowlands throws the finitude of the subject into question by engaging the uncertainty of space and the ambiguity of time. The process of decline and decay becomes an aesthetic event, manipulating the disintegrating form as a means of fathoming new ones.

Notable projects by Rowland include If this light could hold, a large scale sculptural site intervention for Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art 2015; and a 2014 regional Arts Victoria residency in collaboration with the rural town of Charlton that culminated in the presentation of In-between, an exhibition at the Wright family farm that featured large scale sculpture, sound and projected works. Rowlands also recently undertook an Australia Council residency in Detroit USA where he worked with ARI Popps Packing to realise a major series of studio and public works titled Tread lightly for this ground maybe hollow.

In this workshop, Siting/Sitting, Robbie will talk to his own practice and facilitate an environment where participants will have the chance to develop their own experiments, with guidance, and discuss in a fluid workshop environment.

Participants will consider site-specific practice developed through modes of observation from the expanded to the macro. Participants will have the opportunity to record, discuss and test ideas directly within and around the Guildford Lane precinct in the city of Melbourne. The workshop will run between 1pm and 8pm to allow participants to consider the dynamic changes of the city as it transitions from afternoon to evening.

Participants are to bring: a smartphone or camera capable of recording still images and video/sound, sketchbook and drawing/writing equipment, a small torch, and a water bottle. Further information will be provided closer to the date.

Priority will be given to attendees who haven't attended a Test Sites workshop previously.
