Term 3 Daytime Art w/ Naomi Zouwer (6 weeks)

Term 3 > 10 August - 14 September

Thursdays> 12 noon - 2.30pm

In this course students will be guided through a range of exercises that will help to unleash your creative ideas. Using a variety of media students will be encouraged to experiment and play with different approaches to making and creative thinking. Naomi will give demonstrations on a variety of techniques including, drawing, painting, collage and textile techniques that students can use to create works of art.

Course Outline: Paint it, draw it, Sew it!

In this course students will be guided through a range of exercises that will help to unleash your creative ideas. Using a variety of media students will be encouraged to experiment and play with different approaches to making and creative thinking. Naomi will give demonstrations on a variety of techniques including, drawing, painting, collage and textile techniques that students can use to create works of art.

Session 1

Focus on drawing - you will learn the basics of observational drawing techniques practised in traditional ateliers using pencil, charcoal and ink on paper. Topics for discussion will include; line, tone, form and light.

Session 2

Focus on drawing and bringing in colour using gouache and watercolour you will further explore drawing and ways to transform black and white drawings into colour. Topics for discussion will include: colour theory, colour mixing, brushes and papers.

Session 3

Freehand embroidery - you will learn the basics of drawing and painting with thread. You will transform your colour painting from the previous session into an embroidered work. Topics for discussion will include: style, expression, conventional and non-conventional materials for embroidery.

Session 4

Focus on painting - you will explore painting and mark making using acrylic and oil paint on canvas to create a work that you will combine with textiles techniques in the following sessions. Topics for discussion will include: paint and brushes, surfaces such as canvas and board, different methods for applying paint including stamping, stencils and brush techniques.

Session 5

Combining drawing, painting and embroidery into 3-Dimensional forms or 2-Dimensional collage compositions. You will experiment with creative thinking techniques and strategies to help you generate ideas that combine painting with textile techniques. Such as cutting up paintings and sewing them together to make soft sculptures or embroidering over paintings to create textured and layered mix media works. Topics for discussion will include; creative blocks and habits, ways of working.

Session 6

You will continuing developing and refining your own work. Topics for discussion will include: display ideas and options in a gallery setting and types of exhibition options that are available.
